Your Experiences in Life, Are to Better Others: Lessons from James Harrison

In February 2025, the death of James Harrison made significant headlines across major news outlets.  James Harrison was not a celebrity, neither was he the President of a country but his passing sent shock waves across the globe and left many families sad and pained.

The reason why the world sobbed and regretted the passing of James Harrison, was because of the many smiles and happiness he brought to many families while alive. Mr Harrison, also known as ‘The man with the Golden Arm’, saved over 2.4 million babies from death before his passing.

Background

When James was just 14 years old, he underwent a major chest surgery after surviving a chest infection and depended on the blood of strangers to save his life. By way of appreciation, he pledged to donate blood also, as soon as he was old enough (under Australian laws, the legal age to donate blood was 18 years). Four years later, kept his promise and began donating blood despite his phobia of needles.

Ten years later, Doctors discovered that his blood contained an important antibody which was needed to make Anti-D injections. Thus, James’s plasma contained a unique antibody capable of preventing Rhesus disease, a serious condition that can occur when an Rh-negative mother carries an Rh-positive baby. His antibody became the basis for Anti-D injections, which is given to pregnant women to protect the unborn child by stopping the mother’s immune system from attacking the foetus.

Impact

Upon this discovery, James was happy to continue to donate and switched over to plasma donation to help as many people as possible. For over 60 years, he regularly donated blood every 2 – 3 weeks, helping to save over 2.4 million babies including his own granddaughter.

By the time he retired from donating at the age of 81, James had given blood more than 1,000 times. He never sought recognition, yet his quiet dedication made him a national hero. On his final visit to the donation center in 2018, medical staff gathered in tears to honor the man whose selflessness changed countless lives.

Lessons

The valuable life lessons James Harrison teaches us is that we should always use our experiences as a rod to guide and help others so they do not go through the bitter experiences we may have been through. In the process of doing this, we may unveil and discover some valuable and hidden treasures that are innate and may never be known.

In conclusion, never hesitate to help others as long as it is in your power to do so. You may unearth some hidden treasures that would turn your life around forever.
